The questions of meaning that are raised during a child's illness play a significant role in the child's healing and the occasions for calling upon the chaplain may be many.
A chaplain is assigned to every unit in the hospital, and chaplains take initiative in visiting patients on their units. At Cincinnati Children's, a chaplain is available in-house 24 hours daily. Sensitivity to varied faith communities is assured, and relationships with local clergy and faith communities are fostered.
Vision
To be the leader in advancing the practice of pediatric pastoral care.
Mission
Cincinnati Children’s Department of Pastoral Care will support the improvement of pediatric health care through fully integrated pastoral care, bereavement care, and pastoral education and research.
We will respect the diversity of spiritual and faith traditions in all that we do.
For patients/clients and families we will provide family-centered emotional and spiritual care by offering supportive experiences amidst difficult circumstances and by advocating listening and promoting clear communication between them and the Health Care Delivery Team.
For medical center staff we will offer moral and spiritual guidance through support, education, and advocacy.
For pastoral care students, as well as local and professional communities, we will provide leadership in education and research through identifying, developing, and advocating best practices and competency in pediatric pastoral care.
