Supporting Children and Families in Their Time of Need

When a child enters the hospital, a family changes. Imagine the hope and concern that families experience as they wait with a sick child. Their child's compassionate care givers, too, share many of these emotions as they tend to the needs of sick children day after day.

For all of those who rejoice, who question, who pray, who search for meaning as their lives unfold, we offer support through times of great need. Our chaplains at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center offer their ministry openly, respectful of all traditions, witnessing to the love of God in the midst of the crises of illness and injury.

For those seeking a place of quiet and inspiration, the Chapel of the Holy Child has stood as the medical center's spiritual center since 1926. Through all the changes in our world and in health care in the last century, the chapel has remained a place of worship, prayer and meditation for thousands of patients, families and staff.

Now, Cincinnati Children's is growing to better serve our young patients and their families with the most up-to-date facilities. A new hospital tower has been built on the corner of Burnet and Erkenbrecher Avenues now houses all of the patients and most of the staff formerly located in the old Children's Hospital building. So it is fitting that the Chapel of the Holy Child has a new home, one that keeps it at the heart of the life and mission of the medical center. At the same time, the chapel's space has been expanded to ensure a welcome to people of all faiths.

The Best of the Old Blends with the New

The new Chapel of the Holy Child and Multifaith Sanctuary is centrally located on the first floor of the new patient care tower (Location A), just off the main corridor that connects all the buildings facing Burnet Avenue. With interior design done by the Schickel Design Company, the chapel is a place for quiet thought, relflection and prayer. Inspiring stained glass windows are easily visible from the street and from the entrance driveway. They remind all who come here that caring for the spirit as well as the body is at the heart of our efforts at Cincinnati Children's.

In its new location, the Chapel of the Holy Child preserves the best of the old while adapting comfortably and meaningfully to new surroundings. The 12 original sacred stained glass windows have been reinstalled in the new chapel, and the original altar provides a place for private prayer and reflection.

New custom-designed stained glass windows introduce the elements of earth, air, fire and water - as well as the heartwarming image of children playing together. A baptismal font with gently flowing water welcomes new life and provides a soothing background for prayer. Lovely abstract artwork, reversible to fit the occasion, draws the eye to the front of the chapel and the simple altar.

A New Place of Quiet and Inspiration

Our new spiritual center at Cincinnati Children's adds an multifaith sanctuary to enable us to better serve our increasingly diverse population. Simply furnished with reversible abstract artwork, candles and other universal symbols of life, it welcomes people of all faiths.

A folding wall separates the Multifaith Sanctuary from the Chapel of the Holy Child. When the wall is removed, the two chapels can be connected through harmonious design elements and allow us to host larger services.
