Improving the Health of Newborn Infants through Research, Clinical Care, Education, Training and Community Outreach
There is little in our life's experience that is more compelling than a newborn infant. Perhaps we all recognize that the future of our family, as well as society's future, depends on the health of our children. For all its joys, the period around birth is a time of transition and vulnerability for the newborn infant.
Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center established the Perinatal Institute to improve the health of all newborn infants through research, clinical care, education, training and community outreach. In the Greater Cincinnati area, we staff newborn nurseries and are involved in all aspects of care for the newborns.
Integrating Research and Clinical Care
Recognizing that prematurity and congenital malformations remain the major causes of infant morbidity and mortality locally and nationally, the Perinatal Institute integrates clinical quality improvement, pediatrics, epidemiology, public health, developmental and perinatal biology, reproductive science and fetal surgery to align efforts toward improving the care of all newborns.
The collaboration of the divisions of Neonatology, Perinatal Biology, Reproductive Sciences, Pulmonary Biology, Developmental Biology and the Fetal Care Center of Cincinnati brings together clinical care, research and education to advance care for all newborns, including newborns born prematurely and infants born with birth defects.
Focusing on the Needs of the Newborn and the Family
The Perinatal Institute is dedicated to providing comprehensive, compassionate and respectful care. The Regional Center for Newborn Intensive Care (RCNIC) at Cincinnati Children's is a Level III neonatal intensive care unit, providing the highest level of medical care to premature and critically ill newborns. The RCNIC environment incorporates the philosophies of family-centered care and developmentally supportive care.
