Family Meetings

Family meetings are important opportunities to participate in your child's treatment at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. A member of your child's treatment team will call to arrange a family meeting with you. Depending on your child's length of stay, there may be more than one meeting. In a family meeting, you can expect to:

  • Set goals for your child's hospital stay
  • Talk about how you can help your child reach his or her goals
  • Get information on the approximate length of your child's stay
  • Get information and teaching on your child's diagnosis or issues
  • Get information on your child's progress
  • Receive information on medications
  • Discuss recommendations for home and school
  • Coordinate care for when your child is discharged

What is milieu therapy?

Milieu therapy is a planned treatment environment. Everyday events and interactions are used to build confidence and enhance social and coping skills. The milieu or "life space" of the unit provides a safe environment with social learning opportunities and immediate feedback from well-trained and caring staff.

One of the primary goals of milieu therapy is to teach kids how to socially and emotionally fit into their world without changing who they are. They learn new skills that help them to better understand themselves and their relationships. The milieu is a flexible and supportive environment that uses common structures familiar to all children, such as daily routines, predictable rules and activities.
