Discovery STE 3-D Imaging System
- Earlier, safer and more accurate detection of cancer in children is now possible at Cincinnati Children's
- The Discovery STE is a 3-D imaging system combining computed tomography (CT) with positron emission tomography (PET) scanning technology. (PET and CT scans are both standard imaging tools that radiologists use to pinpoint disease states in the body.) A PET scan looks at the function of the body, while the CT scan shows location in the body and provides information about the body's anatomy such as size, shape and location.
The Department of Radiology and Medical Imaging at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center has the largest pediatric radiology department in the country and performs more than 200,000 examinations every year.
Experts in pediatric radiology
Cincinnati Children's is an internationally recognized leader in pediatric care. The Department of Radiology and Medical Imaging has the only pediatric radiology experts in the area. We have modern facilities and the most advanced technology geared toward children. All our radiologists are certified by the American Board of Radiology -- and all have additional training in pediatric imaging.
Our radiologists are also national leaders in promoting pediatric imaging techniques that minimize radiation doses to children. This is important because the lowest radiation dose necessary to provide a quality image should be used.
State-of-the-art technology
All images at Cincinnati Children's are stored electronically in a state-of-the-art system. This enables your physician to view your child's images any time from any facility at the medical center, even from home. In most cases, results are provided to referring physicians within 24 hours. STAT or urgent imaging results are given to referring physicians within one hour.
Specialized MRI services for kids
The technologists, nurses and doctors who work at Cincinnati Children's interact with children every day. They are comfortable handling their special needs and helping them when they are scared. Our experts can also consult with other pediatric specialists at Cincinnati Children's when needed.
Equipment
Smaller body parts require differences in the way picutres are obtained. Different diseases require special imaging considerations. And while MRI scanners are simlar in size, MRI exams should be performed differently for children. If these adjustments are not made, a pediatric disease might not be identified.
Our scanners have special equipment just for children. They are less intimidating, customized for kids and ideal for imaging children.
Goggles
Cincinnati Children's has special MRI goggles to help kids relax. With the goggles kids can watch their favorite DVD or video during their MRI exam, or they can listen to a CD. The goggles are available at all MRI locations: Cincinnati Children's Kenwood, Cincinnati Children's Mason Campus and on our main campus.
Convenient Locations
In addition to our main campus, we have MRI scanners at Cincinnati Children's Kenwood and Cincinnati Children's Mason Campus, with the same child-friendly environments Cincinnati Children's is known for. They are conveniently located with easy access and parking.
If sedation is not necessary, same or next day appointments are usually available at our Kenwood and Mason locations, with test results ready for your doctor in less than 24 hours.
