Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO)

Children's Hospital Medical Center of Cincinnati has been offering extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) since 1985 and is the 14th center in the nation to institute an ECMO program. More than 450 infants and children have been placed on ECMO for respiratory and cardiac support.

The ECMO team consists of pediatric surgeons, cardio-thoracic surgeons, intensivists, registered nurses, registered respiratory therapists and cardio-thoracic perfusionists. The Cincinnati Children's ECMO team has been a member of the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) since its inception. The medical director is Richard A. Falcone Jr., MD. The coordinator is Kim Burton, RNC, BSN.
