Summer Opportunities

Faculty within the Division of Rheumatology at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center participate in several programs aimed at giving high school and undergraduate students experience in a laboratory setting, as well as some programs that have opportunities to observe rheumatology clinical practice.

Our faculty has a wide range of interests that involve:

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship at Cincinnati Children's (SURF)

Director: Sherry Thornton, PhD, Division of Rheumatology

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship targeted at undergraduate and high school junior and seniors interested in clinical and laboratory science. The ulitmate goal of this program is to provide students with an excellent research foundation for making career choices in the biomedical sciences.

Physician Scientist Training Program (PSTP)

Associate Director: Bob Colbert, MD, PhD, Division of Rheumatology

The Physician Scientist Training Program targeted at undergraduate sophomore or junior science majors who are interested in both basic science research and clinical medicine.

High School Summer Student Program

Director: Cindy Bachurski, PhD, Division of Pulmonary Biology

The High School Summer Student Program is targeted at high school graduating seniors interested in a clinical research career.

Women in Science and Engineering (WISE)

Program Director: Urmila Ghia, PhD

The Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) program is targeted to undergraduate women at the University of Cincinnati who are interested in research.
