Overview
Would you like to join the growing number of parents and caregivers who have stopped using tobacco? Have you previously tried to stop smoking and failed? Would you like to try -- once more -- to stop smoking?
If you answered "yes" to these questions, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center Division of Respiratory Care has a smoking cessation program to help you break the smoking habit for life!
About the Smoke-Free Families Program
Our four-week Smoke-Free Families program shows you how to gain control over your behavior. You will be able to talk with other adults that provide group support while learning new habits. You will learn techniques to make quitting a less-stressful experience. Smoking is a learned habit, but it is a habit you can learn to break!
Our Smoke-Free Families program is based on the American Cancer Society's Fresh Start smoking cessation program, designed for adult smokers over 18 years of age.
The Smoke-Free Families program meets once a week for four weeks. Participants will learn:
- Why they smoke and how their smoking affects not only them, but the people around them
- To successfully manage the first few days abstaining from cigarette smoking
- To master the obstacles of abstaining from cigarettes
- How to enjoy abstaining from cigarettes
Our Instructors Have Time to Listen
The Smoke-Free Families program instructors are registered respiratory therapists from Cincinnati Children's. Because the Smoke-Free Families program is limited to 25 participants per program, the respiratory therapists can be more attentive to each individual's situation.
Smoking Not Only Hurts You; It Hurts Your Children
- Your children will not perform well on lung function test
- Your children have twice the risk for respiratory-related hospital admissions
- Your infant is twice as likely to die from SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome)
- When you are pregnant, you have and increased risk of having a low-birth-weight infant
- Smoking is the largest single preventable cause of death and disability in the United States
Once You Stop Smoking . . .
- All of the carbon monoxide leaves your body within days
- Your breathing and your sense of smell improve within weeks
- Your energy level increases
