School Visits

School-aged children have an extensive network of teachers and fellow students. StarShine Hospice staff from Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center receives consent from parents if they would like us to collaborate with school personnel to help inform and support those who are close to the ill child, especially in cases where school intervention and education were not already a part of the child's overall care.

The StarShine Child life therapist and / or social worker fills this role, before and after the death by explaining the disease process, its course and the expected outcome of the illness.

This may initiated an educational forum allowing other personal and emotional issues to be discussed, such as how to best support the family or student, what can be done when the student dies or how to tell the students and school officials of the death.

We are also available for in-school or classroom crisis counseling at the time of death.
