Bio

Dominick T. Nigro, MS, is the former Director of the Office of Student Services in District 31 (Staten Island) of the NYC Public Schools, where he served until September of 2003 when he retired to begin a consulting practice after 33 years of service to New York City Public Schools.

Between 1993 and 2003, as Director of Student Services for District 31, Nigro managed and supervised the delivery of student services to a K-8 school district with 44,340 students housed in fifty school buildings. The student services included:

  • Safety
  • School safety plan review and liaison with the NYPD
  • Violence prevention
  • Crisis management support
  • Suicide prevention
  • Recovery efforts after 9-11 via the FEMA program

He was awarded the Excellence in Education Award from the NYC Board of Education in 2002 for the design and supervision of the district's efforts to address the post-9-11 needs of students in a heavily impacted district. He is currently a partner in Denizen Consulting located in New York City.

Nigro's most recent consultation involved serving as the Interim Coordinator for the New York Academy of Medicine's Office of School Health Program "Moving from Crises to Health and Well Being" initiative which aimed to address the emotional needs of students, parents, and teachers as a result of the events of September 11, 2001 in a cross section of NYC Public Schools.

Nigro served as an Adjunct Instructor at City University of NY and was a substance abuse counselor and teacher; he has been a member of NY City and NY State Commissions and has testified before a US Senate Committee on the impact on children of the events of September 11, 2001. He has had a number of local and national television appearances and produced a teacher training video to assist teachers in providing student support around the first anniversary of September 11th.

Nigro is an advisory board member for the National Center for School Crisis and Bereavement.
