Bio

Scott Newgass, LCSW, is a licensed clinical social worker with more than 20 years experience in the field of school consultation and professional development. His roles include:

  • Education Consultant with the Connecticut State Department of Education for School Social Work, School Psychology and School Mental Health Services
  • State coordinator for Safe and Drug-Free Schools
  • Program manager for the Primary Mental Health Project

Newgass was previously employed on the faculty of Yale University School of Medicine where he was the training coordinator of the Regional School Crisis Prevention Initiative and a clinician with the Child Development-Community Policing Program. He has experience in clinical, hospital, community and disaster-relief settings.

Following the school shootings in Jonesboro, Arkansas, Newgrass provided training and consultation to more than 100 school, district and regional-level school crisis teams in the state. After the national tragedy of September 11, 2001, he co-facilitated with David Schonfeld, MD, the training of NYC schools in crisis response protocols.

Beginning in 2005, Newgass began working with the six Regional Education Service Centers in Connecticut to provide training and technical assistance on a unified and consistent approach to school crisis response. He led the development of curriculum and training to professional staff who then made these protocols and practices available to the 169 school districts within the state. His diverse background in organizational consultation supports his principal interest in strengthening the effectiveness of schools to meet the ever expanding needs brought into schools by students, their parents and community issues.
