Certification Course Descriptions

The Center for Simulation and Research at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center offers the following certification courses:

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) courses offered through the center are sponsored by the American Heart Association. The program is designed to meet the needs of all healthcare professionals who work with or may work with pediatric patients.

The American Heart Association has redesigned the PALS courses based on new scientific evidence from the 2005 Guidelines for CPR and ECC. The goal of the PALS program is to provide the participant with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively manage critically ill infants and children, resulting in improved outcomes.

The program structure combines multimedia presentations, practical skill stations, and the use of Pediatric Human Patient Simulators to enhance adult learning and education. Our certified PALS instructors include physicians, nurses, and respiratory therapists with a background in pediatric emergency and critical care.

Provider Courses:

Provider courses are two-day comprehensive courses designed to provide participants with information needed to recognize and manage children at risk for cardiopulmonary arrest as well as strategies to prevent arrest. The course provides the cognitive and psychomotor skills needed to resuscitate and stabilize those children in respiratory failure, shock, or cardiopulmonary arrest.

Renewal Courses:

Renewal courses are a one-day refresher of the provider course to be taken two years after the provider course. Registrants must be physicians, nurses, paramedics or other health care personnel whose occupation requires managing the pediatric patient. Registrants must have a current PALS card to participate in the renewal course.

Instructor Courses:

Cincinnati Children's also offers PALS Instructor Courses. The course will include review of the PALS courses, both renewal and providers; teaching tactics; one presentation assignment for each instructor attending the course; and additional course information, regarding the PALS program at Cincinnati Children's.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

The ACLS Courses offered through the Center for Simulation and Research at Cincinnati Children's train people for serious cardiac emergencies.

The Advanced Cardiac Life Support Courses (ACLS) offered through the center presents information and skill training needed for the management of serious cardiac emergencies and arrest in the adult patient. The program is designed to meet the needs of all healthcare professionals who may respond to a cardiovascular emergency. This program is sponsored by The American Heart Association.

ACLS courses emphasize the importance of basic life support (CPR) in patient survival, the integration of effective CPR with advanced interventions, and the importance of effective team interaction and communication throughout the resuscitation.

The program structure combines multimedia presentations, practical skill stations, and simulated clinical scenarios that encourage hands-on participation. The use of Adult Human Patient Simulators is incorporated into the courses to provide realistic simulations that reinforce the key concepts of ACLS.

Provider Courses:

Provider courses are two-day comprehensive courses designed to provide participants with information needed to effectively manage and treat cardiopulmonary emergencies. The course provides group teaching, hands-on practical stations, and scenario based education designed for the adult learner. The course provides the participants with the cognitive and psychomotor skills necessary to evaluate and manage the first 10 minutes of a pulseless arrest.

Renewal Courses:

Renewal courses are a one-day refresher of the provider course to be taken two years after the provider course. Registrants must be physicians, nurses, paramedics or other health care personnel whose
