Jamal Farooqui

Credentials

Jamal Z. Farooqui (Ph.D., Aligarh Muslim University, India; Assistant Professor of Dermatology, University of Cincinnati; Scientist, Shriners Burns Institute).

Dr. Farooqui is an expert in skin pigmentation, melanocyte biology, and biochemistry.

Special Interests

He is interested in the isolation, purification, and characterization of a skin lightening agent from human skin transplanted onto athymic nude mice and in its in vivo effects on skin depigmentation using grafted nude mice. He conducts research in the expression and regulation of a bioactive precursor neuropeptide, proopiomelanocortin (POMC), in cultures of human pigment cells and the characterization of its derivative peptides at the protein and RNA levels. Dr. Farooqui's work has substantially increased the understanding of the role of the melanocyte and pigmentation during wound healing. Elucidating control mechanisms for this process will significantly improve the quality and features of grafted skin. His professional affiliations include the PanAmerican Society for Pigment Cell Research, the Society for Investigative Dermatology, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dr. Farooqui's expertise is important to the Skin Sciences Institute because of the critical role of pigmentation in skin health, quality, and appearance.
