Concussion Clinic

A blow or jolt to the head can cause a type of mild brain injury called a concussion. Concussions are not usually life threatening, but the effects can still be serious.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the most common brain injury in sports is a concussion. In fact, approximately 300,000 sports-related concussions occur in the United States each year.

Sports Medicine at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center offers a Concussion Clinic focusing on athletes who have sustained concussions. Athletes will be seen by Jon G. Divine, MD, Medical Director.

Concussion Clinic Evaluation

Patients with concussions from sports will be seen for evaluation within two business days. The evaluation will include:

  • A physical examination
  • Neuro-psychological testing, including short-term memory, reaction time and problem solving
  • Balance testing

If needed, the patient may also be seen by a pediatric neurologist and may receive an MRI.

Return to Play

When possible, Dr. Divine and staff will make a decision within 24 hours after the visit regarding return to play. The goal is to have the athlete be symptom free before returning to play so there is less likelihood of complications with repeat concussions.
