Why I Might Not Be a Candidate for Bariatric Surgery
Bariatric surgery may need to be re-considered if you have certain medical conditions, including:
- A medically correctable cause of obesity
- A substance abuse problem within the preceding year
- A medical, psychiatric or cognitive condition that would significantly impair your ability to adhere to diet, exercise or medication regimens after surgery
- Currently breast-feeding, pregnant or planning to become pregnant within two years of surgery
- Inability or unwillingness of either you or your parent to fully comprehend and accept the surgical procedure and its medical consequences, and the need for lifelong medical surveillance
