Thorough Evaluation

A successful outcome from weight loss surgery requires an informed, highly motivated teen with considerable family support.

If surgery is elected, teens and parents are counseled by bariatric surgeons, a bariatric physician, nurse and dietitian in multiple settings. We also require that all prospective surgery patients undergo an interview by our psychologist.

Quick Recovery Time

The average hospital stay for teens undergoing gastric bypass surgery is three to four days, and many patients will return to school or work within two weeks.

Long-term Follow-up Care

The Surgical Weight Loss Program team at Cincinnati Children's help teens and their families adopt the behaviorial and lifestyle changes that are needed for lifelong weight management. They also offer ongoing guidance and counseling after surgery.

The surgical team is dedicated to regularly meeting with you and your family. The purpose of these visits is to ensure optimal health and recovery after surgery. A personalized dietary and exercise plan is provided to each patient at every visit.

Clinical Research Activities

The Surgical Weight Loss Program for Teens at Cincinnati Children's conducts ongoing clinical research funded by the National Institues of Health (NIH), looking for new and better ways of managing obesity. Our studies also examine ways to improve the options available to assist teens in achieving and maintaining weight loss with minimal side effects. As a result of this ongoing research, patients of Cincinnati Children's are among the first to benefit from new discoveries.

Currently, the Surgical Weight Loss Program for Teens is leading the largest multi-center research effort in the country. Read more about this project.
