Recreational therapists offer interventions for inpatients and outpatients in the pediatric rehabilitation and psychiatric programs at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, directed by the physicians and the teams overseeing the patient's care. 

At Cincinnati Children's, recreational therapists offer services within a continuum of health care. Recreational therapy interventions are intended to assist your child with many aspects of daily life.

Some of the positive results of therapeutic recreation may include building confidence, promoting greater self-reliance, enriching quality of life, easing fear, learning by doing and utilizing leisure time.

Therapeutic Recreation in Psychiatry

At Cincinnati Children's, recreational therapists are members of the psychiatric and mental health treatment teams in both the acute inpatient and partial hospitalization programs.

Recreational therapy interventions include structured activity focused on education, addressing social and leisure skills, community functioning and integration activities as well as instruction in stress management and relaxation techniques.

Therapeutic Recreation in Rehabilitation 

Recreational therapists in Rehabilitation Inpatient Services provide active treatment for children and adolescents admitted to rehabilitation. The main goal is to improve the physical, cognitive and psychosocial functioning of each child served.

Interventions that may be used include adaptive leisure skills, animal assisted therapy, developmental play skills, coping / self expression to disability, community reintegration and community resources.
