Overview
The Tourette Syndrome Clinic at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center is a multidisciplinary clinic that specializes in evaluating, diagnosing and treating kids, adolescents and adults with Tourette's Syndrome symptoms, including tics, hyperactivity, attention deficits, obsessive compulsive behaviors and other symptoms of Tourette Syndrome.
In addition to providing expert medical care for Tourette Syndrome, the staff in the clinic work closely with child psychologists in the community and with groups involved in support and advocacy for children with movement disorders.
Tourette Syndrome is a biologically-based, neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by involuntary movements and sounds called tics. It is commonly associated with symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and other psychiatric and behavioral problems.
Children with Tourette Syndrome may have difficulties with self-esteem, family life, peer relations and school performance. In some cases, severe tics may be extremely disruptive or place the child at risk of injury.
Current medical treatments benefit many children with moderate to severe tic symptoms, but are not effective in all children.
Moreover, medications that suppress tics may have intolerable side effects or may exacerbate associated psychiatric problems. We are engaged in research to find better treatments for Tourette's Syndrome.
