2009 Critical Care Ground Award

The Pediatric Transport Team at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center offers a state-of-the-art mobile intensive care unit environment that allows for the transport of critically ill newborn and pediatric patients from local, regional, national and international referral sites. In-house teams are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to allow a rapid response for medical transports.

The Transport Team is composed of registered nurses, respiratory therapists and emergency medical technicians (EMTs). The team members are specially trained in newborn and pediatric intensive care, emergency and transport medicine, flight physiology and trauma. Team members are also certified in:

Physicians trained in neonatal or pediatric critical care accompany the team as the patient's condition warrants.

The Transport Team performs interfacility transports, providing care for critically ill children and newborns as they are transported from one hospital to another. Established in 1988, the team transports over 2,800 newborn and pediatric patients annually.These patients have presented with traumatic injuries, congenital anomalies, respiratory distress, seizures, cardiac abnormalities and complex medical / surgical problems.

The Transport Team brings the expertise of Cincinnati Children's to the referring institution. Because of their specialized training and equipment, the team is able to provide the highest level of quality intensive care possible to the critically ill or injured child during transport.

The Transport Team philosophy is to provide children and their families with the highest quality of care, in the safest most efficient manner during their time of need.

The Advanced Life Support Team (ALS)

The Advanced Life Support Team (ALS) is staffed with two Nationally Registered Paramedics (NREMTP) who operate under specific protocols that are approved by the transport team medical director. Transport requests are triaged and delegated by the RN or paramedic dispatcher to the appropriate care team. Communication with the MICU, Advanced Life Support Team team and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center nursing and medical staff is maintained as needed during the transport process by the dispatch RN or paramedic through the use of:

  • Alphanumeric paging
  • Landline or cellular telephone
  • Two-way radio devices

Dispatch Center

Our RN and paramedic staffed Dispatch Center coordinates patient transfers to and from Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. They will connect you with a pediatric medical specialist for consultation, when requested, and will work to ensure a smooth transition from beginning to end.

Ambulance Staged at Liberty Campus

The Transport Team at Cincinnati Children's stages one of their ambulances at the Liberty Campus 24 hours a day to better serve patients north of Cincinnati.
