Tuberous Sclerosis Specialists and Services

Description

The Tuberous Sclerosis Clinic at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center is one of the largest clinics in the world. Our experienced team follows nearly 600 children and adults with Tuberous Sclerosis, helping assist in all aspects of their medical care. We serve patients from across the nation with two-thirds of our patients coming from outside of our direct service area.

Our clinic combines the expertise of specialists in several areas to address the medical, psychological and social issues that patients with tuberous sclerosis might face.

The purpose of the Tuberous Sclerosis Clinic is not to replace care from the child's pediatrician or family physician, but to assist the primary care doctor in dealing with those aspects of Tuberous Sclerosis that affect the child's health or development.

The Tuberous Sclerosis Clinic is managed by the Division of Neurology at Cincinnati Children's, and is part of the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

History

The clinic began at Cincinnati Children's in 1992 and was founded by David Neal Franz, MD. At that time, the clinic was the only in the nation to see both child and adult patients. Also, the clinic was the first of its kind to offer multidisciplinary care from other areas of the hospital.

The primary focus of the Tuberous Sclerosis Clinic at Cincinnati Children's was patient care. The clinic has since evolved and is now involved in a large portion of research surrounding the disease. In 2002, the clinic at Cincinnati Children's became the first ever to offer clinical trials for tuberous sclerosis.
