Multidisciplinary Team Approach

The Tuberous Sclerosis Clinic at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center is committed to improving the quality of life for every child.

Our skilled medical team uses a multidisciplinary approach to diagnose, treat and manage children with tuberous sclerosis. This collaborative approach to care helps address the medical, psychological and social issues facing patients with tuberous sclerosis. Plus, by combining all of these specialties into one comprehensive program, you and your child are able to be seen by each specialist in the same day.

Each patient is thoroughly evaluated by a pediatric neurologist and neurology nurse practitioner, followed by consultations with other specialists based the individual needs of the child. After the evaluation, we work closely with you and your child to develop a treatment plan.

The Tuberous Sclerosis team at Cincinnati Children's offers an innovative and progressive model of treatment for children and adults who have been diagnosed with tuberous sclerosis.

Cincinnati Children's also offers many on-site facilities such as the Family Resource Center, which provides personal, comprehensive, up-to-date assistance for patients and their families. The Family Resource Center staff offers the most current information in response to questions related to diagnoses, medical conditions or procedures.

High Patient Volume

The Tuberous Sclerosis Clinic at Cincinnati Children's treats children and adults from all over the world. We have a patient base of approximately 400 patients, many of whom are seen several times a year. Some of these families travel from as far away as Brazil, Alaska, New York, Canada and Seattle, among other places.

Commitment to Tuberous Sclerosis Research

The Tuberous Sclerosis team at Cincinnati Children's is actively involved in clinical research to advance the quality and effectiveness of care of children with tuberous sclerosis. Research efforts include the evaluation of anti-epileptic and behavioral treatments, exploration of impairments associated with tuberous sclerosis and the outcome of early intervention. Current studies include:

  • Clinical trials for RAD001 and rapamycin
  • Sleep disorder studies in children and adults with tuberous sclerosis

Cincinnati Children's works closely with researchers at the Genome Research Institute at the University of Cincinnati.

Your Partner in Care

The Tuberous Sclerosis team at Cincinnati Children's works closely with your child's primary care physician. Consistent communication is maintained with the referring physician regarding the health and progress of each patient placed under our care -- at the time of the initial visit and as we follow up with patients long-term. We also help connect referring physicians and families with appropriate local resources to support their needs, and we facilitate coordinated and transitional care.
