Childhood Obesity Video Overview
Childhood obesity now threatens one in four children with long-term health problems, and the crisis is growing.
Using sensitively filmed day-in-the-life segments with three low-income mothers who are clients of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program, Beyond Nutrition Counseling: Reframing the Battle Against Obesity poignantly highlights the struggles parents face rearing young children.
The video addresses both the prevention and management of childhood obesity. It is intended to encourage discussion among health care professionals and policy makers about the fact that parents may be unable to implement nutritional advice without improved child-rearing skills.
Through a research collaboration between Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and the Kentucky WIC Program, this Telly award-winning video was developed by Robert C. Whitaker, MD, MPH, formerly of the Division of General and Community Pediatrics at Cincinnati Children's, along with Leigh Ann Chamberlin, RD, MEd, and Scott W. Powers, PhD, Division of Behavioral Medicine and Clinical Psychology at Cincinnati Children's, and consultant Susan Sherman, DPA, of SNS Research.
Funding was provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Service, as part of the Fit WIC Project.

Why the childhood obesity video was developed?
Despite the best efforts of WIC health professionals in their counseling sessions with clients, the vast majority of mothers with overweight preschool children enrolled in WIC do not identify their children as being even "a little overweight" (Baughcum 2000).
Therefore, Beyond Nutrition Counseling: Reframing the Battle against Obesity was developed to help close the gap that now exists between how mothers and health professionals perceive childhood obesity.
