Bio

Vincent Giordano, MS, is a Senior Consultant for Health and Education Policy with the New York Academy of Medicine's Office of School Health Programs. In this role, he provides assistance with policy development, planning and program implementation for public and private schools, predominately in the greater New York City metropolitan area. Additionally, he collaborates with federal, state, city, nonprofit and community-based-organizations to secure funding and effective program delivery. He is also a partner in Denizen Consulting, located in New York City. Denizen provides consultative services to school districts and other non-profit organizations in policy initiatives to support learning. These initiatives include the development of policies and strategies that predominately address the concerns of:

  • Safety
  • Crises management
  • Health
  • Student discipline
  • Truancy
  • Dropout
  • Drug abuse prevention / intervention
  • Violence prevention / intervention

Giordano served as the Executive Director of the Division of Student Support Services for New York City's Department of Education. He was responsible for ensuring that over 1,100 schools were provided with resources, direction, technical assistance and professional development to address the myriad of problems facing over one million students attending NYC Public Schools.

Giordano's office developed the initiatives that provided learning supports in the aftermath of the events of September 11, 2001, during which time he collaborated with Gregory A Thomas, MS, David J. Schonfeld, MD, and Marleen Wong, LCSW, PhD. As executive director he was charged with developing policy and procedures related to all learning support services including:

  • Guidance and counseling
  • Comprehensive health education
  • Medical services
  • Attendance
  • Safety
  • Discipline
  • Child abuse prevention
  • Substance abuse prevention

He has co-authored book chapters on New York City's Department of Education's post 9-11 needs assessment. He has been invited to make presentations nationally on topics relating to the provision and coordination of student-centered learning support services and has served on numerous advisory boards involving health, mental health and the emotional issues of students.

Giordano is an advisory board member for the National Center for School Crisis and Bereavement.
