Bio

John J. Hutton, MD, is the former dean of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He stepped down as dean in 2002 after 15 years of service. In June, 2005, he became director of the Division of Biomedical Informatics. In April, 2006, he became vice president of Biomedical Informatics. He also serves as director of operations for the Computational Medicine Center.

His primary research interests are inherited diseases, especially those that affect the lymphocytes, lymph nodes, and thymus (the immune system). He is the author of numerous research papers and has served as editor of the hematology and medical oncology sections of each of the past four editions of Stein's Internal Medicine.

Dr. Hutton has served as a member and chair of the NIH biochemistry study section, and is a member of the American Society of Biological Chemists, the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the Association of American Physicians, and the American Society of Hematology, which he served as national secretary.

As Dean, he served as Chairman of the Board of University of Cincinnati Physicians (the faculty practice organization) and as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Health Alliance of Greater Cincinnati (the health care delivery system affiliated with the College).

Dr. Hutton is a member of the Executive Council of the Association of American Medical Schools and of the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, the accrediting body for medical schools.

Dr. Hutton is board-certified in Internal Medicine with subspecialty expertise in Hematology and Medical Oncology. He is a graduate of Harvard College and the Harvard Medical School. Dr. Hutton completed his residency and research training at Rockefeller University, the Massachusetts General Hospital, the University of Kentucky Medical Center, and the National Institutes of Health.
