Research Grants and Contracts
Consultant to Montana's Children with Special Health Care Needs program to assist with development and management of regional clinics to deliver subspecialty services not otherwise available. Clinics supported included Cleft Palate, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Genetics, and Metabolic conditions. Also contracted consultation with the Montana Division of Family Services regarding difficult cases of child abuse.
Frontier Community Services: Consulting physician member of diagnostic and treatment clinical team for individuals with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and related developmental disabilities.
Denali Family Services (Service agency for children and families affected by mental health problems): Physician member of service teams for children and adolescents with mental health problems related to brain injury and other developmental conditions.
Anchorage Community Mental Health Services: Physician consultant to clinical service teams dealing with children, adolescents and adults affected by developmental disabilities, with special emphasis on consequences of complex trauma.

Special Interests
- Down Syndrome: development of clinical practice guidelines and outcomes measures; development of a national registry of patient data; investigation of therapeutic interventions to affect speech, language, muscle tone, and long-term functional outcome; clinical reality and natural history of cognitive, behavioral, and functional change in adults with Down syndrome.
- Service delivery to people with disabilities: with focus upon rural and logistically difficult environments, including native villages in the Alaskan bush; improving access to medical services for children and adults with disabilities. Actively engaged in exploring use of telemedicine to supplement onsite
clinical service. - Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders: clinical diagnosis of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) and related conditions, including use of distance-spanning technology to expand availability of diagnostic and management resources. Long term management of problems experienced by brain injured individuals. Community-based service models vs. residential treatment center/psychotropic medications. Evaluation of dose-exposure on outcome in FASD. Impact of complex emotional trauma on children in foster care or adoptive placements, especially as complicated by brain injury.
- Ethics: improvement of informed-consent process in prenatal diagnosis; application of family-centered perspective in provision of services to people with disabilities; ethics of intervention into maternal behavior in pregnancy.
