Bio

Karl F. von Tiehl, M.D., is the newest faculty member of the Division of Allergy & Immunology at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He graduated cum laude in Biology from Claremont McKenna College before matriculating at the Medical College of Ohio (now known as the University of Toledo College of Medicine). After medical school, Dr. von Tiehl completed a 3-year combined internship & residency training program in Internal Medicine at the Scripps Clinic and Scripps Green Hospital (La Jolla, CA), where he stayed on to complete a 2-year fellowship in Allergy & Immunology. His basic science research year was spent at the world-renowned Scripps Research Institute (La Jolla, CA) in the prestigious lab of Dr. Michael B.A. Oldstone, where he performed sentinel work on aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease (AERD) and varicella zoster virus vaccination failure under Dr. Donald Stevenson, while assisting in chronic viral infection research in the mouse model. Dr. von Tiehl also remained very involved during his fellowship years in clinical trials in AERD patients and in patients with Plavix (clopidogrel) allergy.

Dr. von Tiehl plans to begin clinical trials this year at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center focusing on the role of aspirin desensitization & therapy in non-respiratory eosinophilic disorders, including eosinophilic esophagitis and patients with the hypereosinophilic syndrome.

Dr. von Tiehl is actively involved in outpatient care, and he will begin providing inpatient consultations soon. Because Dr. von Tiehl is a “doctor for adults,” he is providing care for adult referral patients to the Cincinnati Center for Eosinophilic Disorders (CCED), directed by Dr. Marc Rothenberg. Dr. von Tiehl is also taking new pediatric patients with general allergy problems (e.g. allergic rhinitis, asthma, eczema, hives, angioedema, anaphylaxis, contact dermatitis, and food, drug, latex and venom allergy) and related disorders.
