Bio

Steven B. Hoath, MD, is an expert in newborn intensive care and is particularly knowledgeable regarding skin-based sensing systems for noninvasive biomedical monitoring and measurement. He described a new structure-function relationship in the newborn mammal, i.e., the presence of skin surface hydrophobicity with putative importance in reducing evaporative heat loss and protecting against potential infection.

Dr. Hoath is experienced in the molecular control of epidermal maturation, particularly by epidermal growth factor and calcium, and he provided the first quantitative data on the rate of stratum corneum formation. He has increased the understanding of the pharmacological effects of epidermal growth factor and developed links between its action, alphahydroxyacid generation and tactile stimulation in the newborn.

Dr. Hoath was among eight international researchers in the first National Institutes of Health/NASA project to assess the effects of space flight and zero gravity on mammalian pregnancy and fetal development.

His professional affiliations include the Perinatal Research Society, the Society for Pediatric Research, and the Society for Investigative Dermatology.

Dr. Hoath's expertise in skin development provides a powerful and unique perspective to the Skin Sciences Institute's mission. He contributes an integrative, quantitative perspective on the skin and its role in maintaining health and well being.
