Marty Visscher, Ph.D.

Research

Dr. Visscher is an expert on the effects of environment and skin treatment products on the skin as a function of age, race, skin condition, and skin disease. She has extensive experience about the impact of external factors on the skin of atopic individuals. Dr. Visscher has studied the characteristics of atopic subjects in large, nonclinical populations and conducted industrial research on them. This work has meaningfully influenced skin researchers and clinicians regarding the greater reactivity and vulnerability of atopics, as well as the importance of providing products that are appropriately suited to them.

Dr. Visscher is interested in understanding and maintaining the optimum responsiveness and adaptability of the skin. She pioneered the development and use of psychomotor (sensory) techniques to measure the patient/consumer relevant skin effects of ingredients and products. Her experience in the skin care industry greatly contributes to the applied nature of the SSI's research. As founder and director, Dr. Visscher's role is to fulfill the institute's research and training mission by:

1. establishing appropriate sources of funding (industry members, proprietary projects, grants, etc.),

2. forging the connection between academia and industry, and

3. focusing the research and educational activities of the SSI on its mission and goals.
