When:

Day 1
Children with cleft palate or with non-cleft resonance disorders (hypernasality, hyponasality and cul de sac resonance) present challenges for speech-language pathologists (SLPs), otolaryngologists, plastic surgeons and other craniofacial specialists. This seminar is designed to provide current, practical information for professionals who frequently or occasionally treat individuals with cleft palate, velopharyngeal dysfunction and/or oropharyngeal anomalies that cause abnormal speech and resonance. This seminar will include a review of relevant anatomy and physiology and a description of the types of clefts. The effects that abnormal structures have on speech and resonance will be described. Low-tech and "no-tech" evaluation procedures will be demonstrated. Finally, treatment options and specific therapy techniques will be described and also demonstrated.
Day 2
Children with cleft palate or with non-cleft resonance disorders (hypernasality, hyponasality and cul de sac resonance) present challenges for speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and other craniofacial professionals. This seminar is designed to provide current, practical information for professionals who either serve on a craniofacial team or who frequently treat individuals with cleft palate, velopharyngeal dysfunction, oropharyngeal anomalies, or abnormal resonance. This seminar will begin with discussion of co-occurring functional and behavior problems. In addition, early feeding issues secondary to structural problems and psychological ramifications of facial differences will be described. Participants will then receive hands-on experience with performing a nasopharyngoscopy evaluation and using nasometry. Various options for surgical correction of VPI will be described. Finally, challenging cases will be presented so that participants will be able to test their skills.
