Course Description

This one-day, interactive course will feature a consortium of expert speakers in the fields of pediatric connective tissue evaluation and rehabilitation. Focus will be placed on pathology, assessment, and treatment for this patient population. Emphasis will also be placed on relating concepts of splinting and orthotic management. Specific, evidence based information on joint hypermobility and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) will be presented to provide physical therapists and occupational therapists with a comprehensive approach to evaluating and treating. Those attending will also review differential diagnoses of these patient and specific characteristics to be identified. Common case examples of this population will also be reviewed along with recommendations for frequency of therapy. Laboratory break-out sessions will be included to enhance understanding and allow for dynamic interaction among course attendees at the end of the day. The main goal of this course is to enable attendees to feel confident in providing a comprehensive rehabilitation program for the patient with joint hypermobility.

What is Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome?

EDS is a heritable connective tissue disorder primarily affecting collagen, whose main features are often described as join hypermobility and soft or unusually stretchy skin. This disorder affects approximately 1-3% of the general population with a large female predominance. As collagen is ubiquitous throughout the body, many tissues and organ systems are affected outside the joints and skin. These patients often present with a variety of complaints from join and muscle pain, widespread pain, chronic fatigue, panic disorder, orthostatic intolerance, functional gastrointestinal disorders, temporomandibular jaw dysfunction, headaches and more which may vary tremendously with presentation in pediatrics or adulthood.
