What to Expect

The patient's guarantor is financially responsible for the services provides to the patient at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.

If the patient is the beneficiary of private or government-funded health care coverage, Cincinnati Children's will bill the  third party payor if we have a contract with the payor to pay us directly for covered services provided to the patient. The guarantor's share of the amount billed for covered services (such as co-payments and deductibles), plus any amounts for services not covered by a third party payor, are payable at the time of service.

Cincinnati Children's may determine a patient's eligibility for financial assistance at any time prior to, during or after services are rendered.

If a guarantor is billed for services and it is later determined that the patient is uninsured or underinsured and qualifies for discounts or for hospital services at no charge, the charges billed will be reduced or reversed accordingly.

Cincinnati Children's does not charge interest on unpaid balances owed by the patient's guarantor.

Billing Process

  1. Cincinnati Children's bills the identified third party payor, if under contract with Cincinnati Children's, on behalf of the patient / guarantor. The guarantor's share of the amount billed for services (such as co-payments and deductibles) and any amounts for services not covered by the third party payor are payable at the time of service.
  2. Cincinnati Children's will bill the guarantor for any balance remaining the responsibility of the guarantor under the terms of the applicable payor contract for services covered by that payor and for charges for services not covered by the third party payor to the extent consistent with the payor contract. The guarantor's cooperation is essential in the release of information and in efforts to pay whatever portion of a bill remains or becomes the guarantor's responsibility. Upon request, Cincinnati Children's will provide the guarantor with an itemized bill.
  3. Cincinnati Children's offers financial counseling services to assist and aid the guarantor in meeting financial obligations.
  4. Cincinnati Children's will make every effort to keep the guarantor informed on the status of the account -- primarily using statements sent at periodic intervals.
  5. Past due balances will be referred to the credit and collection staff at Cincinnati Children's for collection follow-up according to established internal procedures.
