Visiting for Surgery
Before a child's scheduled surgery, patients and families are encouraged to tour Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. For more information, please contact the Division of Family and Community Relations toll-free, 800-344-2462.
Before Surgery
Prior to your child's surgery, the doctor will discuss the procedure. It is important to follow all instructions about food and liquids before surgery or the operation may have to be canceled.
The anesthesiologist will describe the type of anesthesia that will be used and when to expect your child to awaken after the operation. A nurse will explain the surgical experience to you and your child.
When it is time for the procedure, your child will be transported to the induction room or the operating room. Cincinnati Children's induction rooms allow a parent to be present while the anesthetic is given, with the anesthesiologist's approval. Another adult must be available to supervise siblings in the waiting area.
During Surgery
During the operation, family members should stay in the parents' waiting area (Location B, level 3). Please register with the receptionist, who will tell you when the surgery is finished.
The surgeon usually will come to the waiting area to tell you about the operation. Small conference rooms are available for private conversations.
After Surgery
After the operation, your child will go to the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU), where he / she will awaken. Your child may spend an hour or more here. A nurse stays at the bedside the entire time your child is in the post-anesthesia care unit. When your child awakens, a nurse will call you in the waiting area so you can rejoin your child.
