Readiness to Go Home

  • The amount of time it takes to be ready to go home varies from child to child. It is not necessary to be fully alert, or to drink, urinate or walk.
  • Your child does need to meet these requirements before leaving:
    • She can breathe safely on her own
    • He is awake or can be easily awakened
    • Any pain or discomfort she is feeling is tolerable
  • Some children have additional requirements. Ask your child’s doctor or nurse.
  • The staff is sensitive to you and your child’s individual needs. Please tell us about any concerns you may have and let us know when you are comfortable and ready for your child’s discharge from the hospital.

Going Home on the Day of the Procedure

  • Your child’s doctor and nurse will review general home care instructions with you. They will discuss any special instructions, such as follow-up appointments, return date for school/daycare and activities, bathing and bandage or wound care.
  • You will be given phone numbers to call if you have additional questions or concerns. Please feel free to ask questions about the discharge instructions or ask for more help if you have concerns about taking care of your child at home.
  • If you go home with a prescription, talk to the pharmacist about how to give the medicine. Be sure to tell the pharmacist about any medicine your child takes at home.
  • When it is time to leave the hospital, your child may change clothes while in the recovery room.
  • You may carry your child to the exit or use a wheelchair or stroller. We will go with you to the exit. If you need to stop at the main campus pharmacy, please tell the transporter.

Pharmacy at the Burnet Campus

Prescriptions can be filled in the hospital pharmacy (Location B, Burnet Campus, first floor). The pharmacy accepts most insurance plans. You may drop off your child’s prescriptions while your child is recovering in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit. The pharmacy opens at 9 am Monday to Friday. Closing and weekend hours vary. Acetaminophen (Tylenol®) is available at a reduced rate.

Unplanned Admission to the Hospital

  • Unplanned admissions are unusual but sometimes occur. If this happens, your doctor and/or anesthesiologist will explain the reason to you.
  • Our nurses and other staff members will be available to answer your questions and help you make arrangements for the admission.
