Young Woman Carried Heart in a Backpack, with Help from Friends
Tiernee Gonzalez, a childhood cancer survivor, lived with an artificial heart while she waited for a life-saving transplant. This story was recorded while she was waiting for the transplant. She had had heart problems ever since she went through chemo as a child. She had her first heart transplant at 12. While waiting for a second transplant, she carried her artificial heart in a backpack. But she never went anywhere alone. Friends, such as Child Life specialists who work with her through the Josh Cares program at Cincinnati Children's, were always there to lend support.
