Adults 20 to 45 Years Old Who Have a Close Relative with Type 1 Diabetes

Why are we doing this research?

Cincinnati Children’s is conducting a research study to learn more about how type 1 diabetes develops and to look at ways to delay it or prevent the condition from occurring.

Who can participate?

Adults 20 to 45 years old without diabetes who have a parent, child, brother or sister with type 1 diabetes may be eligible to participate.

Conditions

  • Adult Studies
  • Diabetes - Endocrinology - Metabolism
  • Healthy Adults

What will happen in the study?

The study includes 1 or 2 study visits, with each visit lasting approximately 1 hour. You will be asked to provide some information about yourself, and there will be a blood draw at each visit. Through a blood test, doctors can determine if you may be at risk for diabetes. Should you test positive for a risk to develop type 1 diabetes, you could take part in and be compensated for other study phases or prevention studies.

What are the good things that can happen from this research?

You may receive no direct benefit from participating in this study. However, you may find out if you are at risk for developing type 1 diabetes. The greatest benefit is that you may be contributing to research that may benefit other patients with diabetes in the future.  Research studies are essential in finding new and improved treatments and diagnostic tools.

What are the bad things that can happen from this research?

You could have discomfort and/or a bruising from the blood draw. A detailed list of possible side effects will be provided to you, should you want to learn more about this study.

Will you/your child be paid to be in this research study?

There is no cost to you or your insurance company, but compensation is not provided for this phase of the study. Should you test positive for a risk to develop type 1 diabetes, you could take part in and be compensated for other study phases or prevention studies.
