Research Study for Healthy Children 8 to 12 Years Old

Why are we doing this research?

Cincinnati Children’s is conducting a research study, sometimes known as a clinical study, to compare the brain activity of children without reading problems to that of children who have reading difficulties and to examine the effect of training in these populations.

Who can participate?

Healthy children 8 to 12 years old without reading difficulties may be eligible to participate. Families need to have access to a computer at home to participate.

What will happen in the study?

Participation in this research study will involve 2 study visits. A detailed list of procedures will be provided to parents or guardians interested in knowing more about this study. Here are some of the procedures:

Your child:

Will have a reading and cognitive assessment
May have an MRI scan of their brain and be asked to complete reading, memory and response tasks while being scanned
Will receive a computerized math or reading program that he/she will be asked to do at home

You will:

Be asked about your child’s behavior, school performance, relationships with family and friends, medical history, treatment and medication
Be asked to help your child to initiate the computerized program at home

What are the good things that can happen from this research?

Your child will not receive a direct medical benefit from participating in this study. However, the information learned from this study may benefit children who have reading problems in the future.

What are the bad things that can happen from this research?

If your child has the MRI scan, he/she may experience some mild discomfort, due to the noise produced by the scanner. He/she will be provided with earplugs and headphones to reduce the noise level. If your child feels uncomfortable while in the scanner, he/she can be removed at any point. Other possible discomforts will be discussed with parents or guardians interested in learning more about the study.

Will you/your child be paid to be in this research study?

Families may receive up to $150 for two visits ($75 each visit).
