Study for Children and Teens With Asthma

Why are we doing this research?

Cincinnati Children’s is conducting a research study, sometimes known as a clinical trial or clinical study, to learn more about the role that the environment plays in determining why some children develop worse allergy and asthma symptoms than others.

Who can participate?

Children and teens 5 to 17 years old who:

Have a diagnosis of asthma
and
Are taking a controller medication

Conditions

  • Asthma

What will happen in the study?

This study includes one study visit that will last 60 to 90 minutes. Here are some of the things that will happen in this study:

You and your child will be asked to complete surveys that include questions that relate to his/her asthma and allergy symptoms, and his/her overall health, etc.

Your child may be asked to complete the following:

Height, weight and other measurements
Saliva collection
Blood draw
Nose swab
Lung function test
Skin prick test for potential allergens

Parents interested in having their child participate will be given a consent form that thoroughly explains all of the details of the study. A member of the study staff will review the consent form with you and will be sure that all of your questions are answered.

What are the good things that can happen from this research?

Your child may not receive a direct medical benefit from participating in this study, but the information we learn from this study may help other children with asthma and allergies in the future. You will receive the results from the skin prick test and/or the diet-related questionnaire if these are completed during the study.

What are the bad things that can happen from this research?

Possible risks and discomforts will be discussed with parents or guardians interested in learning more about the study.

Will you/your child be paid to be in this research study?

Families may receive up to $40 for this one-visit study.
