Main Campus (Burnet)

Four full time music therapists currently provide one-to-one and group music therapy sessions at the Base location, including the oncology, bone marrow transplant, surgical, gastroenterology, neurology, cardiology, psychiatry, physical rehabilitation, neonatal intensive care, cardiology intensive care, and pediatric intensive care units.

College Hill

Living with a psychiatric illness can be stressful. The creative arts therapists at College Hill help children and adolescents nurture their innate creative abilities as a way of connecting with the healthy elements of themselves and working through maladaptive ways of living.

Using art and music creation, children and adolescents in creative arts therapy sessions may work on:

  • Expression of feelings, especially those that are difficult to put into words
  • Coping with psychiatric symptoms, including anxiety, depression, and psychosis
  • Developing self-confidence and learning to take pride in their own creations
  • Processing difficult life experiences, such as loss of a loved one
  • Practicing the skills necessary to form healthy relationships

Music therapy services are available in both the inpatient and residential programs at College Hill. Inpatients participate in weekly music therapy groups, with some patients receiving individual sessions on a case-by-case basis. All residential clients are screened for eligibility for individual music therapy services upon admission.

Art therapy services are available in the residential program at College Hill. All residential clients have art therapy groups scheduled 2 to 3 times per week. Some clients receive individual art therapy sessions on a case-by-case basis.

StarShine

Children know how to make the most of every moment. At StarShine, we follow that example. When the moments with a child you love are fewer than they ought to be, StarShine is here to help make each one count.  Music therapy facilitates patient and family centered interventions for StarShine Hospice Program, Transitions Palliative Care, Perinatal Hospice, and Bereavement Care in the family's home. Goal areas include the redirection of pain, expression of difficult feelings, and reduction of anxiety through music therapy interventions like active/live music making, songwriting, recording, and legacy projects. Ultimate clinical goals include improving the quality of life through individually assessed and clinical needs.
