Patient Quality Overview
Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center is focused intensively on transforming health care delivery. Our aim is to make lasting changes that result in improvement from the point of view of our patients and their families. The scope and impact of our work continues to grow. Work is targeted to address all the dimensions of quality identified by the Institute of Medicine (IOM).
We've learned that dramatic, system-wide improvement starts with goal setting, and so we set stretch goals, with these results in mind:
- We will achieve perfect care
- We will be best-in-class (where benchmarks are available)
- Our improvements will be sustained
We use high-reliability principles and methods to achieve these goals. Our improvements have focused on five key changes in health care:
- Prevent incidence of patients developing infections following surgery
- Prevent infections following central venous catheter insertion
- Prevent pneumonia for patients on ventilators
- Prevent adverse drug events
- Prevent incidence of patients requiring chest compressions or assisted ventilation
Each of these measures has a true, direct impact on patient quality.
