The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the Division of Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center provide the following advice for the oral health of 1-year-olds.

Oral Health Checklist for Children Age 1

  • Clean your child's teeth daily, even if he or she doesn't have teeth. Don't use fluoride toothpaste.
  • Discontinue bottle use unless it is a medical necessity. Use only water at bedtime.
  • Encourage your child to drink plenty of water.
  • Eat a well-balanced diet. Discourage foods that promote tooth decay.
  • Make sure your child is getting the proper amount of fluoride.
  • Schedule first dental exam.
