Improve Care, Get Credit

Improve Care, Get Credit

Cincinnati Children’s gets approval to grant maintenance of certification credits for physicians.

It just got easier for physicians to earn credit for work they are already doing to improve our care processes and patient outcomes and experience.

Cincinnati Children’s now has the expanded ability to grant physicians, certified by member boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), with maintenance of certification credit for participating in our portfolio of improvement projects. The credits count toward meeting the MOC Part IV requirements, which focuses on improvement in medical practice.

In 2010, Cincinnati Children’s was approved as a Portfolio Program Sponsor to directly grant credits for physicians certified by the American Board of Pediatrics. Since then, 1,000 physicians have earned MOC Part IV credit through 37 designated improvement projects.

“Our ABMS approval is anticipated to significantly expand the program’s impact. Six projects that are approved via our ABP program will soon be granted approval through the ABMS program, and a dozen more are in various stages of the approval process. This will allow dozens of additional physician project participants, who are certified by other ABMS boards, to earn MOC Part IV credit for their quality improvement work,” said Derek Wheeler, MD, Chief of Staff.

Though specific requirements and cycle lengths vary by board, all ABMS member boards address four standard components in their programs: professionalism and professional standing; lifelong learning and self-assessment; knowledge, judgment and skills; and improvement in medical practice.
