Cincinnati Breast Cancer and the Environment Research Program

Cincinnati Breast Cancer and the Environment Research Program (BCERP) is a joint effort of researchers from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and the University of Cincinnati, local breast cancer support and service organizations, and local breast cancer survivors and advocates.

Cincinnati is one of three BCERPs throughout the United States funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI).  Cincinnati BCERP receives additional support from local organizations.

The goals of Cincinnati BCERP include:

  • Researching the relationship between the age of breast development and the onset of menarche, the first menstrual cycle
  • Researching the impact of environmental factors on puberty through epidemiological studies
  • Researching the relationship between biochemical processes associated with obesity and cancer susceptibility
  • Educating breast cancer advocates, study participants, the public and policy makers about the research findings and their implications for personal health and public health policies
