Bowel Management

The Colorectal Center's Bowel Management Program at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center helps patients, who are unable to anticipate or control their bowel activity, improve their quality of life.

Each year, nearly 250 children participate in this one-week outpatient program. Ninety-five (95) percent of them attain bowel management through the program, which also helps avoid a permanent colostomy or dependence on diapers, thereby improving self-esteem.

How it Works

  • Each child's regimen is tailored to their individual needs
  • During the week-long program, every effort is made to clean and keep the colon quiet for a 24-hour period with enemas, medications and changes in diet.
  • Some radiologic tests are performed to assist in the best course of action
  • Doctors and nurses meet with patients and families frequently to answer questions and provide the guidance needed to manage the condition
