Shunt Malfunction Signs
How to Schedule a Botulinum Toxin Injections Treatment
Once the decision is made to proceed with botulinum toxin injections, a time will need to be scheduled to administer the injections in the Spasticity Clinic in the Division of Pediatric Rehabilitation at Cincinnati Children's. Please call the Pediatric Rehabilitation office as soon as possible if during your clinic visit it was discussed that you will call in with your final decision.
It takes some time to complete pre-authorization so the sooner a final decision is passed on to our office, the sooner an injection time can be scheduled. A detailed explanation of the procedure is done during the previous clinic visit and pre-authorization done (if needed) in preparation for scheduling the injection session.

What should I do if my child's shunt malfunctions?
- If your child becomes very ill (i.e., persistent vomitting, extreme sleepiness, severe headache), seek medical assistance immediately.
- Call your child's doctor any time you think your child's shunt may have a malfunction.
- Remember that you may see only one or two warning signs at a time. You will not see all of the signs at one time. Call your child's doctor if you notice one or more of these signs in your child.
- Call your child's doctor if vomiting and lethargy occur without fever or diarrhea occuring at the same time.
- Do not push on or put pressure on the shunt valve unless instructed to do so by the doctor.
