Meet the Lab Members

Julie Koumoutsos

Julie Koumoutsos is a member of the Modi Lab.

Julie Koumoutsos is a study coordinator for Dr. Avani Modi in the Division of Behavioral Medicine and Clinical Psychology. 

In May 2006, she graduated from Xavier University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. 

As a Research Assistant, her experiences include coordinating The ABC Study: Adherence and Barriers to Children Diagnosed with Epilepsy and Pilot Study by managing data collection and participant retention.  She also coordinates the Family Day Study, which looks at the effect of new-onset epilepsy on family activity patterns and the impact of parenting stress on these activities.
In the future, Julie plans on attending graduate school to earn her Masters in School Counseling.

Shanna M. Guilfoyle

Shanna Guilfoyle is a member of the Modi Lab.

Shanna Guilfoyle is a doctoral candidate in Clinical Psychology at Kent State University. She received her Bachelor's Degree in psychology and religious studies from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2000 and received her Master's of Clinical Psychology degree from Kent State University in 2005.

Shanna's main interests involve the role of caregivers in the prevention of childhood unintentional injury and in effective disease management for children with chronic illnesses. Her responsibilities include data analysis, manuscript preparation, and assisting with data collection and management for the Adherence and Barriers in Children with Epilepsy Study (ABC Study). 

She will be applying for internship in pediatric psychology this fall and will earn her Ph.D. from Kent State University in August 2009.

Andrea King

Andrea King is an O'Grady Resident in Psychology

Andrea S. King, M.A., is an O'Grady Resident in Psychology in the Division of Behavioral Medicine and Clinical Psychology.  Andrea is completing her doctoral training in psychology at Spalding University, where she was also granted her Master of Arts degree in 2004.  She received her B.S. in 2001 from Eastern Kentucky University.

Andrea is working with Dr. Avani Modi for her research experience during residency.  Her research experience includes collecting data for the pilot and adherence barriers in children with epilepsy (ABC) study as well as developing a study to examine health-related quality of life as a clinical outcome of the New-Onset Seizure Disorder Clinic.

Andrea looks forward to a career incorporating both clinical and research work in pediatric psychology.  Andrea's primary interests include working with children with chronic illness, specifically addressing issues affecting treatment adherence and quality of life.

Kara Caudell

Kara Caudell King is a volunteer research assistant

Kara Caudell is an undergraduate volunteer research assistant for Dr. Avani Modi.  She will graduate from Xavier University in spring 2008 with a bachelor's degree in Psychology and a minor in Theology.  Kara assists in data collection and data entry for  several studies including:

The International Depression Study
The Adherence and Barriers in Children with Epilepsy: ABC Study
The FamilyDay Study

After graduation, Kara plans to apply to graduate school for clinical psychology. 

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellows

Matt Flannigan was a student researcher in the Modi Lab during the summer of 2006 Neha Godiwala was a student researcher in the Modi Lab during the summer of 2006

During the summer the Psychology labs mentor 1-2 undergraduate students through CCHMC's Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF). 

This past summer, Neha Godiwala, a senior at the University of North Carolina Charlotte, and Matt Flannigan, a sophomore at Ohio State University were two SURF students working with both the Modi and Zeller labs.  Throughout their ten week fellowship, Neha and Matt experienced the entire research process; from observing grant submissions and the IRB process to collecting and presenting data.  In addition to research, Neha and Matt were involved clinically at CCHMC by shadowing several psychology related centers, including the Cystic Fibrosis Clinic, New-Onset Epilepsy Clinic, Comprehensive Weight Management Center, Chronic Pain Clinic, and Transplant Service.
