Bio:

Michele Herzer is one of two fellows in the Center for the Promotion of Adherence and Self-Management. Clinically, she provides inpatient consultation/liaison services to parents on the regional neonatal intensive care unit. She also provides clinical services to the Nephrology Team as well as outpatient therapy to children and adolescents with cystic fibrosis and organ transplants (e.g., heart, kidney) to address treatment adherence, family problem solving, and general psychosocial adjustment to chronic illness. Lastly, Michele will be involved in a new clinical service developed to manage adherence problems in children and adolescents referred from various medical specialties at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.

Concurrently, Michele is involved in the development of several manuscripts with Dr. Modi, examining family functioning across pediatric chronic conditions as well as sources/types of social support among obese children. She is also working on several manuscripts with Dr. Hood, examining the prevalence of anxiety in adolescents with type I diabetes, the relationship between anxiety, disease management, and glycemic control, as well as the mechanism by which anxiety impacts health outcomes in adolescents with type I diabetes. Michele also serves as an interventionist for a family-based group behavioral intervention to improve adherence to medications in adolescents with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). She is working closely with Dr. Hommel on developing grants to examine the impact of group and individual behavioral interventions on treatment adherence in adolescents with IBD, and she plans on preparing manuscripts pertaining to treatment adherence in this pediatric population. Finally, Michele will be working with Dr. Drotar on a multi-site, randomized control trial of an intervention to promote adherence to oral medication among adolescents with acute lymphoblastic leukemia
