A Critical Need for Adherence-related Research
Researchers at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Adherence Center are worldwide leaders in the field of adherence psychology. Our innovative clinical research study was developed to describe the process and outcome of behavioral interventions provided to families with the purpose of increasing success with adherence to medical treatment.
What is the Significance of Our Study?
Nonadherence to medical treatment is common among children and adolescents with a pediatric chronic illness and can have a negative impact on health, as well as quality of life.
The newly developed Clinical Service within the Adherence Center focuses specifically on the behavioral management of children and adolescents with a newly diagnosed or long-standing medical condition and affords our team the opportunity to document treatment effects. Families’ participation in this important research allows us to be the first in the country to evaluate treatment for adherence difficulties in a “real world” setting.
The Primary Purpose of Our Study:
To conduct a comprehensive evaluation of behavioral interventions provided to children / adolescents with a range of chronic conditions that are specifically referred to improve their success with medical treatment. Additionally, we hope to describe the factors that predict individual variation in outcomes in response to behavioral interventions that promote treatment.
Because of our growing knowledge and ever improving technology, we have an unprecedented ability to make strides in our understanding of chronic diseases. In our study, we use standardized measures and provide electronic monitors (i.e., MEMs Cap) to monitor medication dispensed from pill bottles.
How Can Families Get Involved?:
Our program offers children, adolescents, and families the opportunity to participate in research that is designed to evaluate the treatments we provide. Participation in our study is completely voluntary. We meet with families after their initial therapy session, then again at 6 months and finally at 1 year. Compensation time and travel are provided.
