Center Research Areas

The Children's Environmental Health Center at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center conducts research and training aimed at reducing disease and disability in children caused by environmental hazards. The Center focuses its studies in the following areas:

  • Adverse effects of lead exposure on cognition, behavior and dental caries.

  • Adult impact of childhood residential lead exposure.

  • Lead in house dust and residential soil and association with subclinical lead toxicity in children.

  • Environmental risk factors for asthma, such as allergens and exposure to tobacco smoke.

  • Environmental tobacco smoke and association with asthma and childhood sleep and behavior problems.

  • Use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging to understand the impact of environmental exposures.

  • Prevention and control of asthma, lead poisoning and adverse neurobehavioral effects caused by environmental toxins.

  • Genetic markers associated with environmentally induced diseases in children.

  • Prevention of injuries in childhood, especially residential injuries.

  • Measuring the morbidity, mortality and economic costs associated with residential hazards, such as lead poisoning, asthma and injuries.

  • Examining adverse effects of exposures to toxins present at low levels, such as lead, tobacco smoke, mercury, PCB’s and pesticides.
