Commitments Frequent Questions
Questions
AnswersQ: How long does the CAP study last?
A: You will be asked to be in the CAP study for one year.
Q: What do we have to do to be a part of the CAP study?
A: To be a part of the study, we ask that you run two air cleaners in your home for one year, have your child perform a breathing test with a hand-held spirometer two times a day for the year, complete three visits in your home, and complete two short phone interviews. During the home visit, your child will be asked to:
- have a few individual hairs cut from his/her head
- give a blood sample
- give a urine sample
- perform a breathing test
Q: Do I have to come into the hospital?
A: NO. All visits during the study will take place in your home.
Q: How long will you be in my home?
A: During the first and last (12 month) visit in your home, we may be there for 2-2.5 hours. The six-month visit will be shorter, around one hour.
Q: What kind of questions will you ask me?
A: We will ask you questions about your child's health, your child's functioning, your child's behavior, and some general questions about your family.
Q: Where did the questions come from?
A: The questions are from surveys that were developed by experts in their fields and some were developed by the CAP study staff.
Q: What happens to my child's blood, urine, and hair?
A: Blood, urine, and hair will all be sent to laboratories across the country which specialize in testing for indoor air pollution. This data will be used to understand the relationship between indoor air pollution and asthma. In addition, some blood or urine may be stored for new tests, which might become available in the future. If these additional tests are done, they will be run completely anonymously--your child's name will be taken off of the sample.
