About Blood Product Transfusion Reactions
Thanks to modern blood bank procedures, few people will experience symptoms following transfusion(s) of blood products. However, if your child should develop symptoms after receiving a blood product, call your doctor or nurse right away.
Symptoms
- Fever over 100.6oF(38oC) orally
- Chills, headache, nausea or back pain
- Dark colored urine
- Hives, itching, wheezing or shortness of breath
- Swelling of feet or ankles or a cough that was not present before the transfusion
Reactions
In rare cases, a delayed reaction can occur 3-10 days following transfusion or red blood cells. Call your child's doctor, if your child develops a fever or becomes pale or jaundiced (yellow color in skin and whites of eyes) 3-10 days after a blood transfusion.
